If you're looking to develop a new product or service or looking to innovate on a way of taking your product to new markets then your business may be eligible for Scottish Enterprise's By Design grant.

Using the grant your business could be eligible for repayment of up to 70% of the project's cost (up to a maximum of £5000).

This grant is therefore useful for businesses new or old looking to innovate through a new product or service and looking to enlist a third party (such as ourselves) to aid in this development.

As a digital agency, we can aid your business in the research, design and development of apps or other digital products.

Example Project 1

Acme Ltd. wish to develop a product to securely store contract details on the blockchain and wish to create a prototype for the accompanying app.

Acme Ltd. obtain a quote from a design agency for £6000 and are then successful in applying to By Design.

Acme Ltd. pay their design agency the £6000 and then claim back 70% of the total project cost (£4200) from Scottish Enterprise by providing evidence that the cost has been incurred and the prototype work has been completed.

Example Project 2

Kwik E-Mart successfully sell fresh produce in their local area – through their shop and through a delivery service. However, they wish to sell their product nationally and would require new packaging designed to retain freshness while delivering nationally.

Kwik E-Mart obtain a quote from a design agency for design and prototyping for £7000 and are succesful in applying for By Design. They then pay their agency £7000 and claim back 70% (£4900) of the total from Scottish Enterprise by providing evidence that the cost has been incurred and the project has been completed.

Things to Note

There are some restrictions on the By Design grant that should be noted before you apply.

You must be an SME (fewer than 250 employees/€50m turnover)
Only non-VAT costs are covered
Funding does not cover work that has already started
Only 10% of project funding can go towards a website
You must have a base in Scotland and be registered for VAT
Funding cannot be used for salaries, travel costs, capital expenditure or standard business expenses
You must pay the full project costs before reclaiming the grant money and you must be able to fund 30% of the project yourself.
